ATAC TV Product Review – Eberlestock Phantom Pack Part 1 of 2

The Eberlestock Phantom is a new type of tactical pack system.  It provides an integrated drag bag and backpack in one system.  This will allow you to carry a heavy weapon system in the backpack scabbard and maintain a full sized pack too. The advantage of the new tactical pack is the ability to deploy a full-sized sniper rifle from the pack very quickly.

The Phantom is modular and can be split into mission specific configurations easily to meet your needs.  Removing the scabbard from the main pack give you just the back scabbard, or the pack, or a drag bag.  This allows reconfiguring the complete pack into a necessary configuration quickly and easily in the field.  Here are some specifics of the Phantom.

Volume:  4500 c.i. total (74 L), without scabbard:  3080 c.i. (50 L)

Weight:   8 lbs 5 oz  (3.75 kg)

  • Wide access top tray compartment
  • Side mounted sleeves for two hydration systems
  • Long pockets perfect for tripods, radios, or other long items
  • High quality, extremely comfortable harness and waist belt
  • New wide bottom Back scabbard allows rifle carry butt up or down
  • Drainage and cleanout zipper at bottom of scabbard
  • Pull out rain cover
  • Full array of PALS compatible webbing
  • New optimum performance “Shooters Harness”, Less bulk, more comfort

The pack itself is a front-loader, with two levels of varying-sized tuck-pockets lining its interior.  The Phantom pack has PALS racks inside and out, and a fold-down shelf that is used to divide the main compartment into upper and lower chambers.  There is a plasticized mesh rack on the upper back wall intended for carrying larger radios and other items.  The Phantom is larger than the Gunslinger-sized packs with the addition of outboard hydration and/or radio pockets on each side.  It can carry two 3-liter hydration kits in the sideslip pockets, and bigger hydration storage in the covered external pockets.  A nice feature is the longer waist belt and has a 5 X 3 PALS matrix on each side of the pack.
